Daily Postcard: A Rock Squirrel stands up to survey the area Jan. 21 at Bandelier National Monument. Rock squirrels are one of the park’s four types of squirrels. They are found anywhere in the park with mature stands of Ponderosa Pines, which supply food to the squirrels, who, in turn, eat a fungus that helps maintain nourishing moisture in the roots of the pine trees. They also disperse seeds that can grow into new mature pine trees. Along with Rock Squirrels, Bandelier is home to Abert’s squirrels, Red Squirrels and Golden Mantled Ground Squirrels.
