NMDOT News:
SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) warns of severe weather and advises motorists to drive cautiously.
According to the National Weather Service, widespread high winds will impact most of New Mexico today. Gusts of 50 to 70 mph are expected creating areas of blowing dust on the eastern plains and blowing snow in the northern and western mountains.
Visibility may be limited. Peak gusts of 80+ mph will be possible over the Sacramento Mountains.
There is a High Wind Warning for most of central, southeast, northeast and a portion of southwest New Mexico. Areas around Ruidoso, Glenwood, Gallup and Chama are under a Winter Storm Warning. Areas surrounding Taos and Farmington are under a Winter Weather Advisory.
Closures:
- I-40 at Holbrook;
- N.M. 532 (Ski Run Road) is closed at Alto;
- U.S. 64 between Tierra Amarilla and Tres Piedras.
Severe driving conditions exist in the Shiprock, Farmington and Bloomfield areas. Travel is discouraged.
High winds can make driving dangerous:
- Slow down;
- Keep two hands on the wheel;
- Avoid large trucks and trailers;
- Watch for downed trees, branches and power lines;
- Keep an eye out for flying debris.
When high winds include dust or snow:
- Pull off the road as far as possible;
- Stop and turn off all lights;
- Set the emergency break;
- Take your foot off the break, make sure taillights are not illuminated. Other drivers to try to follow them and crash into your vehicle.
