NMMNHS News:
Head to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) April 8 for a pair of family-friendly events that showcase the natural world from a different perspective!
A pair of events that invite New Mexico families to take a fresh look at the natural world’s hidden wonders. First, join NMMNHS for a Family Day as part of the traveling exhibition Nikon Small World, which celebrates the best of photographs taken through a microscope.
10 a.m. to 2 p.m., families will have a chance to explore size and scale through a variety of hands-on activities. Meet living tardigrades (water bears) and learn about their adventures in outer space, and help us scale a picture of giraffe into a life-sized mural.
Then, at 3 p.m., the museum will host a Slime Mold Maze Family Workshop. Families will learn about Slime Mold natural history while creating a maze environment for their very own slime mold to explore.
This workshop is part of the museum’s Inspired by Nature series.
The Family Day is free with museum admission, while the slime mold workshop requires separate registration. Registration for the workshop, which covers one adult and up to two kids between the ages of 8 and 18, is $45 for museum members and $50 for non-members. Attendees can pay $10 per additional adult or child.
Both events will be held Saturday, April 8. The Family Day will run 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., while the workshop will begin at 3 p.m. and conclude at 5:30 p.m.
Tardigrades and slime molds aren’t always popular, but both tiny organisms play key roles in their respective biological niches. The run of Nikon Small World is the perfect opportunity to give these unheralded organisms their moment in the spotlight!
