New Mexico Environment Department Accepting Grant Applications From Municipalities, Counties, Authorities

NMED News:

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) is accepting applications for the state fiscal year 2024 Solid Waste Facility Grant Fund projects to fund engineering and infrastructure improvements at landfills, transfer stations, and collection centers.

Municipalities, counties, and solid waste authorities are eligible for funds totaling $100,000.

The purpose of this biannual, competitive grant funding is to assist solid waste facilities with implementing infrastructure projects that will help protect the health of the environment and residents of New Mexico now and for future generations. Well-designed, constructed, and maintained facilities mean solid waste can be managed in a way that protects the surrounding community.

Grant funding can be used for engineering services, facility design, and preparation of plans, environmental monitoring wells, traffic flow improvements, litter control mechanisms, and other improvements at landfills, transfer stations, and collection centers.

“As New Mexicans, we know that clean water, air, and lands require thoughtful stewardship,” Solid Waste Bureau Chief Joan Snider said. “These funds enable communities to improve how they manage their solid waste and in turn enhance public health.”

Ineligible entities are encouraged to partner with eligible entities. Matching funds or in-kind contributions are not required but are encouraged. As a reimbursement grant, entities are required to cover the cost of project expenditures up front.

This grant program will further the department’s goal of investing in $65 million in communities this fiscal year, one of the economic performance measures as discussed in NMED’s Quarterly Performance Assessment Report.

Applications can be found on the NMED website.

Applications may be submitted by e-mail, mail or fax and are due no later than 5 p.m. Friday, April 28. Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis for the state fiscal year starting July 1 and ending June 30, 2024.
