Seven LAHS Art Students Win State Competition Awards

LAPS News:

Seven Los Alamos High School art students won 10 awards in the 2023 New Mexico Scholastic Art & Writing Competition. Students were recognized at an awards ceremony earlier this year at the Orpheum Community Hub in Albuquerque.

The awards include two Gold Keys, four Silver Keys and four Honorable Mentions in the Digital Art, Drawing & Illustration, Painting and Sculpture categories. The works of the Gold Key award winners are automatically entered into the National Competition.  

Gold keys were awarded to Taylor Kanzleiter for Digital Art, and Olivia Long for Painting. Silver Keys were given to Madison Mckee and Maya Price for Digital Art and Painting, respectively. Sydnee Etuk received two Honorable Mentions, for Art Portfolio and Digital Art, and senior Elise Ovaska was awarded an Honorable Mention for Painting. 

Audrey See received two Silver Keys, one for Painting and one for Printmaking, and an Honorable Mention for Mixed Media.

Organized by The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards were established in the early 1920’s to encourage, foster and reward creativity in our nation’s classrooms. It is the largest, longest- running and most prestigious student recognition program in America, according to the New Mexico Art Education Association website. The contest is open to students in grades 7 through 12.

Throughout its 90-year history, the Scholastic program has provided early recognition to some of our nation’s most celebrated artists and writers, including Richard Avedon, Harry Bertoia,Mel Bochner, Truman Capote, Red Groom, Robert Indiana, Joyce Maynard, Joyce Carol Oates and Robert Redford. Internationally recognized artists with a Colorado connection include Quang Ho, Dale Chisman, Mel Silverman, Donald Lipski and Hugh Grant.
