LALT News:

Los Alamos Little Theatre (LALT) announces a series of acting classes taught by local actor and director (and all-around theatre nerd) Jazmine Torres.

The classes begin June 26 and will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Mondays at the Performing Arts Center, 1670 Nectar St.

The classes will be a mixture of games and exercises, acting theory and scene work. Participants can come to one or all classes as their schedule and interest permits. Suggested donation of $10 per class, but whatever floats your boat.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Class 1, June 26
    • Being in the Moment — What does “telling the truth” mean in acting and how can you use that skill to overcome the intimidating aspects of being on stage.
  • Class 2, July 10
    • Script analysis — Learning to score a script and extract more meaning from it. Introduction to taking acting notes. What is it that makes a scene engaging to an audience?
  • Class 3, July 17
    • Connection — What does it mean for an actor to be “a cup at the edge of the table”? Review and incorporate previous classes’ techniques. Practice how to give acting notes in a kind and productive manner.
  • Class 4, July 24
    • Kinesthetic Awareness — There’s more to a performance than what’s in the script. Examples and practice of “show don’t tell.”
  • Class 5, July 31
    • Intensity or Working with Heightened Text — which direction this class goes will depend on participant interest. Intensity would involve raising the stakes for a scene and tools for debriefing tough scenes. Heightened text would involve speech analysis, consonants, vowel, rhythms and rhymes.

Torres directed two plays in LALT’s 8×10 production last season and has studied theatre with San Juan College and Santa Fe University of Art and Design. She has appeared in theaters in Santa Fe, Dixon and Farmington.
