Using photographs, amateur films, posters and other materials, Alison Griffiths, PhD, explores the history of the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial from its inauguration in 1922 to the early 1940s.

This public lecture, noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2 is co-sponsored by the New Mexico History Museum and Friends of History in conjunction with the museum exhibition, Honoring Tradition and Innovation: 100-Years of Santa Fe’s Indian Market, 1922-2022, and the 2023 Santa Fe Indian Market. 

The Ceremonial is a yearly celebration of Native American cultures that includes parades, powwows, rodeos, pageants, food, art show and vendors and is now the longest-running annual event in New Mexico attracting an international audience.

Dr. Griffiths is Distinguished Professor of film and media studies at Baruch College, The City University of New York. A renowned expert in the history of ethnographic film, she is also the author of several award-winning books.
