Los Alamos County Council presented a proclamation, which declares September as “Voter Registration Month” during its regular meeting Tuesday night.
Councilor Suzie Havemann read the proclamation:
WHEREAS, Los Alamos County is committed to the highest standards of election integrity and also to encouraging broad voter registration, access, and citizen participation in elections among voting-eligible citizens; and
WHEREAS, Los Alamos County recognizes that many Americans are not able to vote because they miss a registration deadline, do not update their registration information, or are unfamiliar with how to register; and
WHEREAS, on January 1, 2016, New Mexico joined 26 other states in providing online voter registration, with more than 5,700 electronic registrations and 20,000 transactions processed by the Los Alamos County Clerk’s office to date, with currently more than 15,600 registered voters; and
WHEREAS, On March 14, 2019, the New Mexico House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 672, allowing New Mexico to join 17 other states and the District of Columbia in offering same-day voter registration options to eligible voters; and
WHEREAS, Los Alamos County recognizes the need for diverse partners such as nonprofits, libraries, businesses, colleges, universities, and more to work in the communities they serve to register citizens to vote; and
WHEREAS, the need for reliable and trusted public information and education on voter registration is critical to Americans’ active participation in elections and the integrity of electoral processes.
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the Council of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos, I do hereby proclaim the month of September 2023, as “VOTER REGISTRATION MONTH” AND FURTHERMORE, declare Tuesday, September 19, 2023, as “VOTER REGISTRATION DAY” and encourage all eligible citizens to register to vote and participate actively in the democratic process.
