FIRST News:
Los Alamos is an active community in youth robotics with several key programs in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) robotics series (firstinspires.org).
These programs are mentioned below. Mentors are needed to assist with all steps of the program, but particularly in the basic levels at the FLL or elementary/secondary schools. Any interested individuals can contact info@team4153.org for more information and they can point you in the right direction and offer resources to begin the journey. All of these programs focus on using teamwork and growing engineering, science, and technological skills to build robots and learn aspects of real-world concepts.
From the website: “First Lego League (FLL) – uses Mindstorm robots and simple programming to solve simple tasks and move robots around a simple field with goals of completing tasking. Focus is on teamwork and building with legos and robot-controlled engines.”
“First Tech Challenge (FTC) – robots of slightly larger sizes complete tasks on a playing field in both autonomous and teleoperations (manually driven) mode over a couple minute period in combination with other teams to learn game strategy, mechanical build, and programming skills along with teamwork.”
“First Robotics Competition (FRC) – the game moves to even larger playing fields and robots with CAD-drawn parts, 3-D printers, computer numerical control (CNC) machines, and advanced programming and pneumatic control.”
In an effort to recruit the startup of more teams at the elementary school level, The FRC Team Project Y will be hosting a FLL Mentor Workshop 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Sep. 9 at 1990 Diamond Dr.
