County Sustainability ManagerAngelica Gurule
COUNTY News:
The Los Alamos County Public Library System is launching a new series featuring leaders of Los Alamos County.
The first event in the series, “An Evening with a Community Steward,” will feature Los Alamos County Sustainability Manager Angelica Gurule for an open discussion 6-7 p.m., Oct. 12 at Mesa Public Library.
Gurule, with her professional excellence in environmental stewardship, has recently taken on the role of Sustainability Manager after nearly a decade with Los Alamos County Environmental Services Division.
“One of my first priorities in this role is to develop a climate action plan,” Gurule said. “Providing opportunities for the community to share their concerns and offer suggestions for the climate action plan is of utmost importance. I hope this book discussion is one of the many avenues we can use to reach out to more people who don’t attend the usual County events or meetings.”
The evening will be structured as a book discussion. Gurule has selected the book Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants, by Robin Wall Kimmerer. The book is a thoughtful investigation of our reciprocal relationship with the living world and describes this journey from the author’s perspectives as both a distinguished professor of science and a Citizen of the Potawatomi Nation. With this as a launching point, Gurule will facilitate an open discussion about the book and about the County’s climate action plan.
This new program of discussions, led by Community Stewards and produced by the Los Alamos Public Library System, will be a vehicle for current and future leaders of Los Alamos County to share their expertise and enthusiasm on many topics of importance to us all.
“We have been the home to many lively and informative book discussions and author readings. It’s natural to consider the excellent professionals and experts right here at home in Los Alamos County as a resource to tap into,” said Eva Jacobson, Senior Librarian, Community Engagement. “Choosing Angelica as our first discussion leader and our Community Environmental Steward is an amazing start to what we hope to be an ongoing program highlighting the most relevant topics we hear about from our community members.”
