NMED News:
ALBUQUERQUE — The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) is reviewing a Stage 1 Abatement Plan (Plan) to address soil and groundwater contamination at the Former Cal-Maine Egg Plant, at 9615 Broadway Boulevard SE in Albuquerque (Site).
On behalf of Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. (Cal-Maine), EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC (EA) submitted the Plan Oct. 24, 2023, to continue the assessment of environmental contamination caused by more than 50 years of Site operation as an egg production facility, which closed in 2006. Site pollutants include nitrate, chloride, sulfate and total dissolved solids.
The Plan, available here, proposes the collection of additional soil and groundwater data across the Site to provide a baseline of the current contamination conditions impacting the Site. The Plan also provides contingencies to expand the current Site monitoring network and data collection requirements, as required, to meet the Plan objective, which is to provide Cal-Maine with sufficient information to select an appropriate cleanup strategy.
By Dec. 23, 2023, NMED will either approve the Plan or require Cal-Maine to address identified deficiencies and resubmit the Plan. Once Cal-Maine obtains sufficient information to identify the source and extent of the Site contamination, Cal-Maine will submit a Stage 2 Abatement Plan that identifies the preferred cleanup strategy for the Site.
For more information on the Plan, contact Kate Herrell of the State Clean-up Program at 505.670.1796 or kate.herrell@env.nm.gov, or Paul Chamberlain at 505.670.2571, paul.chamberlain@env.nm.gov. NMED is providing this notice of receipt of the Stage 1 Abatement Plan pursuant to 20.6.2.4108 (A) NMAC.
