ALBUQUERQUE — Public defenders in the Albuquerque office are hosting three warrant workshops for New Mexicans with warrants from Bernalillo County.
These workshops are an alternative to police roundups and court safe surrender programs. They offer a one-stop shop to resolve or get cases back on track.
“This is a safe space for our clients. There’s no fear of arrest. They can bring their phones, which they can’t do if they go to court. And we’ll have snacks and some winter essentials for those in need,” Albuquerque District Defender Dennica Torres said.
While this a public defender-led project, it is a collaboration with the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office and Second Judicial District Court, both of which are providing staff for the workshops. The group will work with walk-in clients to address low level felonies in non-violent cases. To see if the warrant in your case qualifies for the workshop, call their office at 505.219.2868 or just walk in to the workshop hours.
“We hope clients who are afraid of being arrested in the community or are afraid of coming to a court house will feel safer meeting with us in the public defender office and will benefit, along with our community, from getting their warrant taken care of,” Chief Public Defender Ben Baur said.
