Los Alamos
It really is the most wonderful time of the year, especially for barbershop music.
COVID may have postponed the October return of the Lasses and Lads of Enchantment’s (LALOE) “I Believe in Music” performance. If you know our local barbershop chorus, you can’t keep a good man or woman down.
The LALOE and the Santa Fe Harmonizers (SFH) have moved the concert to Jan. 26-27, 2024, and got back to practice for the holiday season. The practice paid off as they were asked to perform for the White Rock Baptist Church on Friday evening and the Rotary Club annual Christmas party this week. The holiday harmonizing combined once again last weekend, as they jingled their bells for two hours of glorious strains at Smith’s Market Place. Their golden tones benefit the local Self Help program, through the work of the Salvation Army.
Hark! the Herald Angels Sing, Christmas Chopsticks, While by My Sheep, Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming were just some of the repertoires for the combined chorus. Then, Three Nice Guys, and yes there are four singers, took a turn to demonstrate the four parts of music; tenor, lead, bass and baritone that make up the portions of each song.
Many kind shoppers donated to the local cause, of which all of the funds raised by local bell ringers stays right in our community. As the entryway to Smith’s filled with music, many hearts soared with the spirit of giving that fills the season.
Saturday, the combined choruses head to the Santa Fe National Cemetery to show appreciation for the many volunteers and veterans that will lay wreaths to show their respect for the fallen. “Honor, Remember, Teach,” is the motto of the Wreaths Across America program and according to their website, more than 2 million are expected to gather across 4,000 locations.
Finally, those who have held onto their October show tickets, they are still good for the Jan. 26-27 performances. The Friday night event will be held at the United Church of Los Alamos and the Saturday event in Santa Fe. More on the show will come out in January, but don’t fret, the headliner quartet, Sound Check, from Salt Lake City, Utah is headed back for the fun.
