Driver Arrested After Refusing To Stop At DWI Checkpoint

NMSP News:

HOBBS – On Dec. 28, 2023, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) was conducting a DWI checkpoint on US 62/180 outside of Hobbs.

During the checkpoint, a Nissan pickup truck approached the checkpoint at a high rate of speed. NMSP officers attempted to get the driver’s attention and have them slow down, but the driver refused and accelerated through the checkpoint, initiating a pursuit.

Tire deflation devices (stop sticks) were successfully deployed but the driver still refused to stop. A pursuit intervention technique was utilized and brought the truck to a stop.

The driver of the truck, identified as Michael Pineda, 40, of Hobbs, exited the truck and fled on foot. Officers were able to catch up to him and detain him.

After performing field sobriety tests, Pineda was placed under arrest for aggravated DWI. He was also charged with other offenses including aggravated assault upon a peace officer, resisting evading an officer, and battery upon a peace officer.

DWI checkpoints act as a proactive measure to identify and remove impaired drivers from the road before they harm themselves or other drivers. This incident is an example of why it is important for New Mexico State Police to conduct DWI checkpoints throughout the year, around the state.

This incident remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.
