After it was announced last October that Atomic City Quilts Owner Shelly Kuropatwinski wanted to retire, she and her husband James have had a number of conversations with interested buyers, but no one has stepped forward to take on the business as a sole proprietor.

“There has been a lot of partial interest, which is great because we are absolutely interested in seeing a fabric store remain in Los Alamos,” the Kuropatwinskis said. “From CB Fox to Mountain of Fabrics, to  Pandy’s, to Dunn Quilting and now Atomic City Quilts – Los Alamos has hosted a fabric store for most of the last 70 years!”

Due to this amount of interest, the Kuropatwinskis are going to host a “request for interest” meeting to toss around ideas for re-structuring the business as a partnership, co-op, or LLC with interested individuals.

“We firmly believe there is sufficient interest and abilities to keep a quilt store in our home town,” Shelly said. “Perhaps you have a long-arm which you would like to scale up as a commercial venture or  you have a love for needle point or cross-stitch and would like to see the store’s threadworks section  expanded. James’ open leather table is getting popular, so maybe expansion into your favorite craft can be your addition to the partnership. The sky is really the limit!”

The “request for interest” meeting to discuss re-structuring ideas will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30 at Atomic City Quilts at 1247 Central Ave. Ste. C.

“We look forward to seeing you as we talk about the future of fabric in Los Alamos!” the Kuropatwinskis said.

Light refreshments will be provided at the meeting, so to have an accurate count, those planning to attend are asked to RSVP as soon as possible to james.j.kuropatwinski@gmail.com.
