NMSP News:
ALBUQUERQUE — At around 9 a.m., Jan. 24, 2024, New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Auto Theft agents with the Crime Suppression Bureau were looking for a vehicle that had been stolen during an armed carjacking the night before.
The suspect was later identified as Benjamin Robert Marquez, 31, of Albuquerque.
Through investigation, NMSP agents located the vehicle in a small gated apartment complex near Southern Avenue and Alcazar Street Southeast. Since Vanburen Middle School was in the immediate area, agents coordinated a plan with the NMSP Special Operations Bureau to take Marquez into custody.
Out of an abundance of caution, a lockdown was placed on Vanburen Middle School. Once the children were all safely inside the school, agents and officers took Marquez into custody without any further incident.
NMSP agents charged Marquez with Receiving or Transferring a Stolen Vehicle. Agents contacted detectives with the Albuquerque Police Department to continue their investigation of the carjacking.
Marquez has a significant and violent criminal history to include:
- Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer

- Felon in Possession of a Firearm
- Possession of a Controlled Substance
