SANTA FE — Efficient and innovative ways to improve the health of all New Mexicans will be highlighted at the New Mexico Legislature at the 9th Annual Public Health Day at the State Capitol 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Feb. 12.
Threads of Wellness: A Tapestry of Public Health is this year’s theme to highlight the intricate fabric of public health, enriched by the wisdom of the Indigenous perspective. Public Health Day will showcase DOH’s programs and services and the efforts of community organizations statewide to better provide broad health care opportunities for all people statewide.
“The Department of Health’s goal is for New Mexico to become the healthiest state in the United States by 2040,” Patrick Allen, DOH Cabinet Secretary said. “The work that DOH and all of our community partners do is being supported in the legislature this year through steps like finalizing the establishment of the Healthcare Authority Department.”
The event is hosted by the New Mexico Department of Health (DOH), the New Mexico Public Health Association (NMPHA), the New Mexico Alliance of Health Councils (NMAHC), UNM Center for Native American Health, Albuquerque Area Southwest Tribal Epidemiology Center (AASTEC) and the Public Health Institute.
DOH will be at the State Capitol on Public Health Day sharing information about some of our most important programs including Medical Cannabis, School Based Health Centers, Injury and Violence Prevention, Hepatitis and Harm Reduction, Immunization and the Office of Tribal Liaison.
In addition, DOH will host a booth offering free adult COVID and flu vaccinations throughout the day.
Public Health Day 2024 is a perfect opportunity to learn from one another, to further raise awareness with legislators and the public about the public health issues we are tackling together and to move towards a more engaging conversation benefiting New Mexico.
DOH and community partners are working to improve public health responsiveness statewide through a series of services and legislation to create a broader spectrum of health care options in rural and urban areas across New Mexico.
