PEEC: February Astronomy Programs At Nature Center

Take a dive into the amazing world of Astronomy! The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is offering an exciting array of astronomy programs this month at the Los Alamos Nature Center.

Take a look at this month’s schedule below: 

  • At 7 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 9, gather in the planetarium for an exploration of the Night Sky in February. Learn which planets, constellations, star clusters, and more are visible as Steve Becker leads a virtual tour of the current night sky. Admission: $8/adult, $6/student;
  • At 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, cozy up for the full dome planetarium film One Sky Project. One Sky is a collection of beautiful short films about constellations, astronomical instruments, and scientific knowledge from various cultures around the world. Admission: $8/adult, $6/student;
  • At 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, visit the planetarium to marvel at imagery from local photographers during the Astrophotography Showcase. Images will include last October’s eclipse, as well as deep space objects. Admission: $8/adult, $6/student;
  • At 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, tune in for the Fulldome Film: We are Astronomers. This film reveals the global collaboration, technology and dedication required to answer the unresolved questions of the Universe. ‘We Are Astronomers’, narrated by David Tennant is an exciting 360° Fulldome digital planetarium show produced by NSC Creative with input from UK astronomers. Admission: $8/adult, $6/student;
  • Friday, Feb. 23, the Los Alamos High School Astronomy Club will present Constellations Across Cultures. This program will take viewers on a journey across the night sky, time, and cultures as they learn about the stories and uses for the constellations that have fascinated and inspired humans for thousands of years. Admission $8/adult, free for students;
  • Saturday, Feb. 24, join PEEC for Solar Science Saturday at 10 a.m., a day of family oriented hands-on activities exploring the sun. 2024 is NASA’s big year, with the IMAP mission launching in 2025. Explore solar studies and IMAP’s observational techniques. Admission: $10/family; and
  • Also Saturday, Feb. 24, come to the planetarium for the Fulldome Film: Fantastic Fractals at 2 p.m. Fantastic Fractals is a spectacular, award-winning fulldome planetarium show that takes viewers on a tour of the fractals in nature and zooms through infinitely complex mathematical fractals. Featuring original music, the show is both educational and highly entertaining, and suitable for audiences ages 4 and up. Admission: $8/adult, $6/student.
