Santa Fe Pro Musica Presents Quatuor Ébène April 14

Pro Musica News:

SANTA FE — Santa Fe Pro Musica’s popular String Quartet Series concludes at 3 p.m. April 14 with the French ensemble Quatuor Ébène performing music by Mozart, Alfred Schnittke, and Grieg.

Quatuor Ébène is named after the wood “ebony,” a component of string instruments that “resists time and is a symbol of exotic cultures” (former cellist Raphael Merlin).

The quartet is also unique in their classical music background— have led double lives as jazz, folk, and rock musicians. What began in 1999 as a distraction in the music school’s practice rooms —improvising on jazz standards and pop songs—has become their trademark—“a string quartet that can easily morph into a jazz band” (New York Times). They went on to win international competitions and awards in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2019.
