Daily Postcard: A black bear peeks around a tree trunk Sunday at Bandelier National Monument. Black bears aren’t often seen in Bandelier. However, there’s likely a larger population living in the lush canyons and higher elevations than sightings would indicate. Occasionally, a bear(s) finds its way into the most visited area of the park. When that happens, it’s important that the bear(s) remain wild and not become used to people and human food. Why? Bears learn quickly and will return to areas where they find food. Not only can this be dangerous for people, but it is also harmful to bears. Storing food and disposing of garbage properly can mean the difference between life and death to a bear. Learn more at: https://www.nps.gov/articles/bearsafetyfood.htm.
