Daily Postcard: Bighorn Sheep Stands In Profile At Bandelier

Daily Postcard: A bighorn sheep stands in profile among trees and grass recently at Bandelier National Monument. Male bighorn sheep are known as rams and have horns on their head that can weigh up to 30 lbs. Females, called ewes, have much smaller, shorter horns, but both rams and ewes use their horns as tools for eating, fighting, and occasionally scratching an itch. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep are a subspecies of bighorn. They are native to the region but were extirpated in the early 20th century, due to hunting, livestock grazing, and introduction of diseases from domestic livestock. In 2014, the New Mexico Department of Fish and Game began relocating bighorns to Santa Fe National Forest from the Wheeler Peak herd. Occasionally some cross through Bandelier. Courtesy/NPS
