New Mexico State Police Charge Gallup Man With Murder

GALLUP — June 14, 2024, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP)  Investigations Bureau was called to investigate an apparent homicide at 1591B N.M. 264 in Gallup.

NMSP Investigations Bureau agents learned that on June 14, 2024, McKinley County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) received a call about a male with a head injury at 1591B N.M. 264. Upon arrival, MCSO deputies spoke with the homeowner of the residence, who gave them consent to enter the residence.

Once inside, deputies observed a male in a bedroom, laying facedown near the doorway with signs of trauma to his head. The male was identified as Antonio Nez, 52. As deputies continued to clear the residence, they observed a second male lying underneath a blanket. He was identified as Henry McCarthy, 36.

Deputies also observed a rifle in the bedroom where Nez and McCarthy were located. McCarthy was then detained at the scene.

Agents later learned that Nez and McCarthy shared a bedroom and on the evening of June 13, 2024, they were consuming alcoholic beverages before being involved in a verbal altercation.

At some point during the altercation, McCarthy fired at least one round, striking Nez. Nez was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.

McCarthy was arrested and charged with 1st Degree Murder and unlawfully and knowingly discharging a firearm at a dwelling or occupied building.

This case is under investigation by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau.
