Mama Goose, Ed & Gosling Spotted At Ashley Pond

Mama goose, Ed and their gosling were spotted today at Ashley Pond. The gosling first debuted as a tiny yellow fluff ball with its mama in early June. Mama goose with her pal Ed laid approximately 11 eggs in early May. Los Alamos County Senior Animal Control Officer Theresa Phelan kept a watchful eye on the new parents and their eggs and checked them daily. When she noticed four of the eggs had been eaten by some predator, a dog igloo was erected around the nest and when bits of lettuce were spotted near the shelter, a small construction fence was installed. These precautions were taken, Phelan explained at the time, because there was a concern that if the female doesn’t feel safe, she will abandon the nest. It appears this gosling is the only to survive. Photo by Sharon Snyder
