SANTA FE – On Sept. 22, 2024, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Investigations Bureau was requested by the Santa Fe Police Department (SFPD) to investigate an officer-involved shooting (OIS) involving the Santa Fe Police Department.
State Police agents learned that at around 6 a.m., SFPD officers were dispatched to 102 La Placita Circle for a disturbance. Stephanie Grace Coon, 33, of Santa Fe, who identifies as Gracen, was reported to be violent and armed with a box cutter. Coon was making threats to kill the victim in the residence.
When SFPD officers arrived on the scene, Coon approached them armed with a box cutter. SFPD officers gave Coon multiple commands to drop the weapon. At this point in the encounter, at least one officer fired their duty weapon, striking Coon. Officers rendered medical aid until the ambulance arrived and transported Coon to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by the Office of the Medical Investigator. No officers were injured.
The involved officers’ names will not be released by State Police.
NMSP act solely as factfinders in their investigations and conduct an unbiased and impartial investigation.
In officer-involved shootings, NMSP thoroughly documents the scene, collects evidence, and interviews officers, subjects, and witnesses. In turn, the agency compiles facts as detailed as possible and forwards all reports and evidence to the appropriate District Attorney for further review and consideration.
The New Mexico State Police does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified. This determination rests solely with the District Attorney reviewing the investigation.
