October is here, and with it comes a quintessential fall tradition: the Los Alamos Pumpkin Patch. There’s something undeniably magical about wandering through the field by the Canyon Complex filled with those vibrant orange Halloween staples, searching for the perfect pumpkin to carve or decorate.

Why does Los Alamos love this event so much? Perhaps it’s the nostalgic feeling of autumn, the crisp air, and the colorful foliage. Or maybe it’s the simple joy of spending time outdoors with loved ones. Or it’s possibly helping to fund some worthwhile school activities for our local youth. Whatever the reason, the annual pumpkin patch offers a unique and enjoyable experience for people of all ages.

Los Alamos Choirs holds this event every year with more than 2,700 pumpkins brought to the community. This year, the Choirs are partnering with Los Alamos NJROTC for the annual event.

The LAHS and LAMS choirs, along with NJROTC, will be splitting the proceeds from the pumpkins that are sold. The event is used as a fundraiser to help pay for competitions and trips, such as taking the choirs to New York to sing at Carnegie Hall or the NJROTC cadets to San Diego to see the Navy firsthand.

The arrangement of the pumpkins and the scenery surrounding them has changed each year, giving families unique photo opportunities each time they come by, while remaining an event that the Los Alamos community has come to count on.

The field by the Canyon Complex will be readied this Saturday and a semi truck load of pumpkins will be brought in on Monday, with many students and families from the choirs and NJROTC on hand to unload them.

It will be one of the biggest fundraisers done by the choirs and Topper Company this year.

“Topper Company is thrilled to be working with the choirs,” said Petty Officer Matt Bohlen, Naval Science Instructor at Los Alamos NJROTC. “I think the best part will be the joy that people get coming to the pumpkin patch. Families come every year, and as their families grow they bring their own families. NJROTC is eager to become a part of those memories.”

The Los Alamos Pumpkin Patch will be located at the Canyon Complex at 335 Trinity Drive. It will be open for business on Monday, Oct. 14, and will continue through Oct. 31. The patch will be open 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the weekends.

The leaves are changing color, we’re beginning to sweep our streets and yards, and there’s a little chill in the air that wasn’t there before – it must be fall! And if it’s fall, then that must mean it’s time to round up the family and head out to the Los Alamos Pumpkin Patch to find the perfect Halloween pumpkin! Courtesy/NJROTC
