ART News:
The nuanced figures of Edwards’ psyche draw one into a storytelling beneath the surface. His paint holds emotion and intention as he relies on brushstrokes which are breath itself. Diving deeply into the evocative quality of paint, he investigates symbol, line, myth, and memory. Edwards’ paintings are both exuberant and tender, subtle and bold, buoying them to the collective human experience.
An Edwards’ collector comments, “As always, your enigmatic content opens doors to many layers of theme, none of which have an end date”.
Edwards paints with no preconceived boundaries by mentally removing himself from the work as he trusts a process of empathy; the last remaining threads of feeling alive. Relying on the compass of traditional painting he breaks new ground while honoring history.
Finding early gallery success Edwards chose to continue growing his work without representation for over a decade. Therefore, allowing an uninterrupted commitment to reach his own indelible imagery. After 35 years, this exhibition will show a mastery of paint handling with a freedom and self-truth distinctly his own.
On Edwards’ show Boomerang, 2007, Alex Ross remarks, “Free to break taboos and satirize the sacred, these spectacles uphold a critical mirror to the restraints that society compels upon the psyche”.
