SANTA FE  —  Those impacted by the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire and subsequent cascading events now have until March 14, 2025, to start a claim under a deadline extension included as part of a bipartisan spending bill that will provide an additional $1.5 billion to the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Assistance Act

The measure, known as a continuing resolution (CR), adds almost three months to the previous Dec. 20, 2024, deadline for starting a claim. Congressional leaders included a filing deadline when they established the $3.95 billion compensation fund two years ago for those affected by New Mexico’s largest fire and cascading effects, to include flooding resulting from the burn scar.

Congress adding $1.5 billion to the fund will enable the Claims Office to continue to compensate all those who suffered damages resulting from the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire.

The CR also allows affected people to apply for a no-cost five-year flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program until March 14.

Although impacted individuals and businesses now have more time to submit a Notice of Loss (NOL) to the Claims Office, they are encouraged to take this first step as soon as possible.

The Claims Office has paid close to $1.7 billion in compensation to claimants and continues to be committed to assisting all who are eligible.
