NMSA News:
More than 30 Theatre students—24 on stage and a dedicated crew of 8 behind the scenes— are bringing Arthur Miller’s story to life in a bold, unforgettable production directed by New Mexico School for the Art’s (NMSA) Theatre Chair Barbara Hatch.
Rehearsals are in full swing at NMSA for this classic and timely play written in 1952 towards the beginning of the McCarthy hearings – the “witch hunt” of that era.
Set in 1692 in Salem, Mass., the hysteria engendered by the extreme Puritanism of the people struggling to survive in this harsh new world, and the illicit desires of some girls and other community members, led to what was the beginning of a series of trials and executions of accused “witches”.
Some historians believe the afflictions were physical, but modern historians believe that desire, jealousy, spite and a need for attention instigated the events.
