SFNF: Seasonal Wildlife Closure On Jemez Ranger District

SFNF News:

SANTA FE — The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) will implement a seasonal road closure on Forest Road 376 on the Jemez Ranger District to protect important wildlife species against motorized vehicle disturbance.

In accordance with the Forest’s Travel Management Rule and Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM), Forest Road 376 from its junction with NM State Highway 126 north to its terminus at the San Antonio Hot Springs Trailhead, will be closed to motorized use March 3, 2025, through July 1, 2025. Non-motorized use is permitted for hikers and bicyclists interested in using the road as an access point to San Antonio Canyon.

The restriction on motorized use reduces the amount of disturbance to local wildlife as certain species enter the critical breeding season. According to the Jemez District biologist, “The winter season leaves many wildlife species with low energy reserves; reducing the amount of noise they experience during this time gives them a better chance of successfully reproducing. Some species are adapted to a certain amount of disturbance from humans while others need a little more space to raise a family. San Antonio Canyon offers so much to its visitors; here is chance for us to give back.”

The SFNF reminds visitors who are planning to visit San Antonio Canyon or San Antonio Hot Springs by foot or bicycle to please practice responsible recreation and pack out all trash.

The MVUM is available on the SFNF website. For more information on road closures, contact the Jemez Ranger District at 575.829.3535. Stay up to date on closures and current information by visiting the SFNF website under “News and Events or following our social media pages on X and Facebook.
