COUNTY News:
Art in public places helps to create beautiful public spaces and the Art in Public Places Advisory Board values community input.
Ongoing work being pursued by the Board:
- The Board created a Working Group to discuss possible action on the proposed Justice Center Art proposal to purchase art for a Police Officer Memorial.
- Barranca Homestead Working Group update: The Working Group plans to bring language for a call for art, language to survey local residents, and a budget to the April meeting.
- Nature Center Art Proposal Working Group submitted 3 alternative sculpture options to the Board for consideration. The Board voted to approve the sculpture option and move forward with soliciting public input leading up to and during PEEC’s Earth Day celebration, and
- The survey for the Betty Ehart Center gate closes 3/28/2025. Results will be provided in the April 24, 2025 APPAB meeting.
- Based on the Citizen Petition presented to County Council requesting the County purchase “Boys of Pajarito Plateau” the Board and County staff have taken the following actions:
- Retracted the Board’s Policies and Procedures to address concerns raised by Council,
- Discussed possible dates that the full Board (all 5 members) could meet to vote on the purchase of “Boys of Pajarito Plateau” by Jeff Segler. A tentative date/time of April 15, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. was selected for this Special Meeting. Due to current vacancies on the Board, this date and time is pending the appointment of 2 members to the Board. Appointment of new members for the APPAB is on County Council’s agenda for their April 8, 2025 meeting.
- County staff is working to maximize community input and is planning to take public comment for this special meeting via eComment, public notices to invite the community to participate in the meeting, and links to send comments directly to the Board.
Funding for the acquisition of art is defined within the Los Alamos County Code, Sections 20-364 and 20-365. Changes to the Art in Public Places Advisory Board funding would require changes to be made to the County Code. Funding sources defined by the County Code:
- 1% of the budget of any capital improvement projects, whose budget exceeds $20,000.
- 0.5% of the budget of any road project.
