LLA News:
Leadership Los Alamos hosted the Youth & Education session March 7 at the Los Alamos Teen Center. This event aimed to build skills and awareness to effectively support the youth in the community while addressing education-related issues at regional, national and state levels.
Session Details
The event was chaired by:
- Eli Argo, Teen Center Director
- Mike Holtzclaw, UNM-LA Chancellor
- Carter Payne, LAPS Assistant Superintendent
- Kristine Coblentz, LAPS Prevention Program Coordinator
LLA Board Liaisons:
- Kalyn Schultz-Muller
- Jennifer Aylmer
The session included welcome, introductions and a series of activities including:
- Workshops on public speaking and communication skills
- Discussions on youth behavior and mental health
- Data highlights from the 2023 LAHS YRRS
- Insights on academic needs and pathways to graduation
Participants had the opportunity to hear from esteemed speakers, including Judge Elizabeth Allen, Jamie Thorsden Monroy (Mental Health Therapist), and educational experts from UNM-LA and LAPS.
Lunch was provided by Pi-239 Pizzeria and salads from Blue Window, allowing participants to network and share insights as they prepared for the afternoon sessions. The event culminated in a recap and reflection session that ensured valuable takeaways for each attendee.
The Youth & Education session succeeded in engaging educators, community leaders, parents and students passionate about the education and well-being of youth in Los Alamos. Leadership Los Alamos is thankful for the participation and contributions that made this event meaningful.
