Los Alamos County Environmental Services reminds residents and businesses not to dispose of trash or hazardous materials in recycling dumpsters after a one-ton commercial recycling load was contaminated and rendered unrecyclable Wednesday, April 23 due to motor oil disposal.
Improper disposal of hazardous waste such as motor oil, batteries, paint, and chemicals presents serious safety risks to waste management workers and the environment. When these materials are placed in recycling containers, they not only endanger public health and safety but also compromise entire recycling loads—forcing them to be sent to the landfill instead of being processed for reuse.
“This kind of contamination turns valuable recyclable material into trash,” Environmental Services Manager Armando Gabaldon said. “It’s a setback for our community’s recycling efforts and a cost to residents.”
To ensure safe and responsible disposal of household hazardous waste (HHW), residents are encouraged to take advantage of the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days, held on the first Friday of each month. The next HHW collection event will take place Friday, May 2, 2025.
Residents unsure about what can or cannot go into the recycling roll carts and dumpsters are encouraged to visit the County website and use the Recycle Coach feature. This user-friendly tool provides up-to-date information on acceptable recycling materials and hazardous waste disposal options.
