SPORTS News:

The Los Alamos JV tennis team competed with determination and spirit this past weekend at the USTA Northern NM (NNM) JV Tournament held in Albuquerque April 26–27. Facing strong competition from schools across New Mexico, the Los Alamos boys’ team earned an impressive second place overall, while the girls’ team fought hard to claim third place.

The girls’ roster included Lucia Rudin, Lilly Viteva, Angelie Echavie, Leah Gramer, Lorrin Fordham, and Ajla Bock. Throughout the tournament, the team showed steady improvement and impressive teamwork, with several players advancing deep into their draws and delivering strong performances against tough opponents.

On the boys’ side, Logan Swickley, Cullen McLean, Adis Bock, Owen Mclaughlin, and Drew Bacrania were joined by Bryan Lee (who competed Sunday) and Adrian Koo (Saturday). The team combined smart shot-making with resilience, securing crucial wins that propelled them to a second-place finish in the final standings.

Head coach Travis Gibson praised the team’s effort and camaraderie. After the tournament Coach Gibson reflected, “These two teams have shown tremendous growth over the course of this tennis season. The boys team started out as a group of relatively strong players for a JV team, but over the course of the season they grew stronger to the point they are now—where they had a legitimate chance to beat Albuquerque Academy JV for the championship. On the girls’ side, some of the team has come from complete beginner level to competing with some experienced girls and reaching the third-place round.”

Standout performances included gritty doubles matches by Logan Swickley and Cullen McLean, and wins against Albuquerque Academy in the finals by Adis Bock (singles) and the doubles pairs of Mclaughlin/Lee and Bacrania/Bock. On the girls’ side, Angelie Echave, Leah Gramer, Lorrin Fordham and Ajla Bock all started the season as beginners, and by the end of the season won both their singles and doubles matches in the third-place championship match vs Santa Fe High School JV. The tournament experience sets a strong foundation for these developing JV athletes. Los Alamos HS tennis looks forward to building on this success as they continue to develop their young athletes and prepare for future competitions.

Congratulations to the Hilltoppers JV Tennis teams for an outstanding weekend!
