COMMUNITY News:
June 18 is Veterinary Appreciation Day and the Los Alamos Animal Shelter has a great safety net to help them accomplish their daily work. Paul Sena is the Manager of the local shelter and utilizes many community partners for the benefit of our furry friends.
“Veterinarians are essential to keeping our shelter animals healthy and thriving. Through established agreements, we’re fortunate to work with several veterinary providers,” Sena said. “The Animal Clinic of Los Alamos provides compassionate care for everything from routine checkups and vaccinations to emergency services.”
If Sena needs back up support when situations arise, he relies on trusted partners off the hill, like Cottonwood Veterinary Clinic, Smith Veterinary Hospital, and Arroyo Seco Animal Hospital. Sena always wants to ensure that every animal receives quality care to be safe and well.
Sena and his shelter staff benefit by working with two local behavioral trainers — Amy Leyva from Leyva Dog Training and Daniele Ruley from The Pawsitive K9. Los Alamos County is fortunate to have a resolute team committed to the best possible care for animals at the Animal Shelter. Sena’s team includes Animal Control Supervisor Theresa Phelan, Senior Animal Control Officer Miki Moreno, Animal Control Officer Fanny Capolungo, and a wonderful team of devoted volunteers.
Veterinary Appreciation Day was started in 2015 by Trupanion, who today will announce their annual awards. Locally we’d also like to salute the Los Alamos Shelter staff along with local and regional providers that go above and beyond. The idea is to celebrate every member of the staff from the front desk to the exam room.
Those that care for animals exhibit a tireless compassion, but they also carry a unique burden. Sometimes such a caring profession needs to be met with support and understanding. As members of the public, we can meet them with our own care, encourage self-care, and show them kindness on any day, not just celebratory occasions. If you know one of those mentioned above, please tell them thank you for all they do, not just today, but any day of the year.
