New Mexico Pro Hockey Club Announces Three Finalists For ‘Name The Team’ Contest

NMPHC News:

RIO RANCHO — Following a strong response from the community, the New Mexico Pro Hockey Club (NMPHC) has announced the three finalists for its official team name.

The “Name the Team” contest generated nearly 2,000 submissions from fans across the state and beyond.

The following names have been selected as finalists:

  • Cutthroats — A nod to the native Rio Grande cutthroat trout, New Mexico’s state fish, known for its aggressive nature and striking colors.
  • Goatheads Inspired by the goathead thorn – a relentless desert weed that’s nearly impossible to kill – and the wild Ibex goat – a symbol of survival in harsh, mountainous terrain.
  • Tarantula Hawks — The tarantula hawk, New Mexico’s state insect, is one of the Southwest’s most formidable predators. This large wasp is known for having one of the most painful stings in the world.

Fans are invited to cast their vote for their favorite name at NMProHockey.com. Voting is open now and will close at 5 p.m., Thursday, July 3. In addition to voting, fans are encouraged to stay engaged by following the team on social media: Instagram, X, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

The New Mexico Pro Hockey Club was officially introduced in May as the newest expansion franchise of the ECHL, a premier professional hockey league. The team is owned and operated by REV Entertainment. The club will begin play in the 2026–27 season and call the Rio Rancho Events Center home, bringing professional hockey back to the region with a fan-first focus and an exciting, family-friendly experience.
