New Mexico’s Unemployment Rate 4.2% In May 2025

New Mexico’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.2 percent in May, down from 4.3 percent in April and up from 4.1 percent in the previous year. The national unemployment rate in May was 4.2 percent, unchanged from April and up from 4.0 percent in May 2024.

Total nonagricultural payroll employment grew by 18,700 jobs, or 2.1 percent, between May 2024 and May 2025. The majority of gains came from the private sector. The private sector was up 17,400 jobs, or 2.5 percent, while the public sector was up 1,300 jobs, or 0.7 percent. Within the private sector, the private service-providing industries were up 5,900 jobs, or 1.0 percent, while employment in the goods-producing industries was up 11,500 jobs, or 11.0 percent, from the level in May 2024.

Six of the nine private industries reported gains compared to employment levels in May 2024. Within the goods-producing industries, mining and construction employment increased by 10,400 jobs, or 13.6 percent. Most job gains were in construction, which was up 9,400 jobs, or 17.7 percent, over the year. Mining was up 1,000 jobs, or 4.3 percent. Manufacturing was up 1,100 jobs, or 3.9 percent.

Within manufacturing, employment in durable goods manufacturing was up 300 jobs, or 1.9 percent, and employment in non-durable goods manufacturing was up 800 jobs, or 6.5 percent.

Within the private service-providing industries, private education and health services posted a gain of 5,800 jobs, or 3.9 percent. Within the industry, the majority of gains were in health care and social assistance, which was up 4,200 jobs, or 3.3 percent. Private educational services was up 1,600 jobs, or 7.8 percent. Professional and business services was up 2,800 jobs, or 2.3 percent. Financial activities was up 1,300 jobs, or 3.7 percent. Trade, transportation, and utilities employment was up 700 jobs, or 0.5 percent. Within this industry, wholesale trade was up 500 jobs, or 2.4 percent; transportation, warehousing, and utilities was up 200 jobs, or 0.7 percent; and retail trade was unchanged.

Leisure and hospitality employment was down 2,800 jobs, or 2.8 percent. Information was down 1,800 jobs, or 15.8 percent. Miscellaneous other services was down 100 jobs, or 0.4 percent.

Within the public sector, state government was up 2,000 jobs, or 3.4 percent. Within state government employment, state government excluding education added 1,600 jobs, representing an increase of 4.9 percent. State government education was up 400 jobs, or 1.6 percent. Employment in local government was up 500 jobs, or 0.5 percent. Within local government, most gains were in local government education, which was up 400 jobs, or 0.7 percent. Local government excluding education was up 100 jobs, or 0.2 percent.

Federal government was down 1,200 jobs, or 4.0 percent, from its employment level in May 2024.
