COUNTY News:
As part of the project to install a new chiller at the Los Alamos Ice Rink, a 140-ton crane and one tractor-trailer will be traveling through Downtown Los Alamos on route to the Ice Rink on West Road between 9 a.m. and noon, Wednesday July 2.
Due to its weight the crane and the tractor-trailer cannot cross the Omega Bridge and therefore will be traveling up the Main Hill on NM502/East Rd, then through Trinity Dr. to Diamond Dr. before turning onto West Rd. to the Ice Rink. If needed, the Los Alamos Police Department will provide escorts to the crane on its way up NM502 and travel through downtown.
Crane operations at the Ice Rink are scheduled for July 2 and will be contained within the Ice Rink parcel. A temporary closure of West Rd. may be needed to allow the crane and the tractor-trailer to maneuver into the Ice Rink parking lot and the space behind the Ice Rink garage. The closure will be removed after the crane and tractor-trailer have safely cleared West Rd. The Public Works Department has designed a temporary traffic control plan to assist the travel of the crane and temporary closure of West Rd.
Access to the Ice Rink Trailhead may not be possible as the front and west parking lots will be closed July 1-2.
Traffic control devices along West Road will be set up July 1. The Los Alamos Ice Rink front parking lot will be closed from Noon Tuesday July 1 until the afternoon of Wednesday July 2, 2025.
The crane’s departure is scheduled to occur on Wednesday July 2 and will follow the route used for its arrival. The cranes departure will occur outside peak traffic hours. If needed, the Los Alamos Police Department will provide escorts to the crane on its way along NM502 out of town.
Residents and visitors are urged to use caution to safely travel up NM502 and through town. Travelers between TA-43 and TA-62 are urged to use caution to safely navigate through West Road.
Los Alamos County appreciates your patience and diligence as this important component to the Los Alamos Ice Rink is put into place.
