The Los Alamos Local Business Coalition (Coalition) invites public review and input on its “Local Business Billboard Collective” idea, a proposal aimed at boosting the economic vitality of Los Alamos County by exposing nearly every visitor to Los Alamos area attractions to marketing messaging from local businesses.
This initiative is one of six forward-thinking ideas detailed in the newly released “Coalition Idea Book”, now available as a PDF on the Coalition website.
The “Local Business Billboard Collective” idea seeks to foster a stronger local economy by:
- Increasing Patronage and Visibility: The initiative aims to increase patronage at local businesses by visitors, tourists, and local residents. This addresses the current situation where tens of thousands of visitors come to the community each year, but often have little or no idea of the local retailers and restaurants available to serve them.
- Targeting Visitors, Tourists, and Locals: It proposes marketing to the large number of visitors who travel to Los Alamos but may bypass local businesses. The concept involves establishing a billboard presence along the highway leading to the White Rock Y, which would provide a way to reach the vast majority of these visitors, as well as local residents traveling the route.
- Enhancing Local Business Survivability: By increasing visibility and customer traffic, the initiative aims to enhance the retention and survivability of existing local businesses.
“We believe that improved marketing of our local businesses to both visitors and residents who pass through our community can create a powerful ripple effect that strengthens our entire economic fabric,” a Coalition spokesperson said. “This initiative is about building a more resilient and sustainable local economy for everyone.”
The “Local Business Billboard Collective” idea, along with other innovative concepts like the “Storefront Recapture” and “Local Procurement Initiative”, were generated through extensive community engagement and forums held since February 2025. These ideas are designed to address the top challenges facing the Los Alamos business environment, including affordable commercial space, complex and opaque regulatory environments, workforce shortages and high housing costs, as well as the perceived lack of support and access to funding for local businesses.
The Coalition encourages all citizens, business owners, and community stakeholders to review the complete set of ideas presented in the “Coalition Idea Book” on its website. Public feedback and engagement on the ideas are invited to work together to build a more prosperous Los Alamos.
