PEEC News:
The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) invites community members to experience the beauty and wonder of local butterflies during a Butterfly Walk from 9–11 a.m., Saturday, July 26. The group will meet at the Los Alamos Nature Center at 8:45 a.m., for check-in before caravanning to the Water Canyon trailhead. Participants should arrive on time to ensure a prompt departure.
Led by ecologist and pollinator expert Simone Lord, the walk will encourage slowing down and observing the fascinating lives of butterflies in their natural environment. This free, guided outing will take place in scenic Water Canyon and offer participants a close-up look at native butterfly species and their habitats.
The walk will include both on- and off-trail exploration, weather permitting, and will cover some uneven and loose terrain. Attendees are encouraged to bring water, snacks or lunch, sturdy walking shoes, rain gear, binoculars, and cameras. Insect nets are optional for those interested in a hands-on experience.
About the Presenter:
Simone Lord is an ecologist specializing in wildlife conservation and pollinator-plant interactions. Originally from Iowa, she relocated to New Mexico in 2022 and has developed a passion for the southwestern environment. Outside of her work, Simone enjoys hiking, snowboarding, reading, and crocheting.
