New Mexico’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.2 percent in June, unchanged from the rate in May and unchanged from the rate in the previous year.
The national unemployment rate in June was 4.1 percent, down from 4.2 percent in May and unchanged from the rate in June 2024.
Total nonagricultural payroll employment grew by 23,500 jobs, or 2.7 percent, between June 2024 and June 2025. The majority of gains came from the private sector. The private sector was up 21,000 jobs, or 3.0 percent, while the public sector was up 2,500 jobs, or 1.3 percent. Within the private sector, the private service-providing industries were up 10,500 jobs, or 1.8 percent, while employment in the goods-producing industries was up 10,500 jobs, or 10.0 percent, from the level in June 2024.
Six of the nine private industries reported gains compared to employment levels in June 2024. Within the goods-producing industries, mining and construction employment increased by 9,400 jobs, or 12.2 percent. Most job gains were in construction, which was up 8,200 jobs, or 15.3 percent, over the year. Mining was up 1,200 jobs, or 5.1 percent. Manufacturing was up 1,100 jobs, or 3.9 percent.
Within manufacturing, employment in durable goods manufacturing was up 400 jobs, or 2.5 percent, and employment in non-durable goods manufacturing was up 700 jobs, or 5.6 percent.
Within the private service-providing industries, private education and health services posted a gain of 8,000 jobs, or 5.5 percent. Within the industry, the majority of gains were in health care and social assistance, which was up 6,700 jobs, or 5.3 percent. Private educational services was down 1,300 jobs, or 6.7 percent. Professional and business services was up 2,600 jobs, or 2.1 percent. Financial activities was up 2,100 jobs, or 5.9 percent. Leisure and hospitality employment was up 900 jobs, or 0.9 percent.
Information was down 1,300 jobs, or 12.0 percent. Miscellaneous other services was down 900 jobs, or 3.1 percent. Trade, transportation, and utilities employment was down 900 jobs, or 0.6 percent. Within this industry, retail trade was down 1,100 jobs, or 1.2 percent; wholesale trade was down 100 jobs, or 0.5 percent; and transportation, warehousing, and utilities was up 300 jobs, or 1.0 percent.
Within the public sector, state government was up 2,600 jobs, or 4.9 percent. Within state government employment, state government excluding education added 2,100 jobs, representing an increase of 6.4 percent. State government education was up 500 jobs, or 2.5 percent. Employment in local government was up 1,300 jobs, or 1.2 percent. Within local government, all gains were in local government education, which was up 2,100 jobs, or 4.1 percent. Local government excluding education was down 800 jobs, or 1.5 percent. Federal government was down 1,400 jobs, or 4.6 percent, from its employment level in June 2024.
