Los Alamos Makers News:
Los Alamos Makers is excited to announce a unique opportunity for high school students to dive into the world of 3D printing and design through a 4-day intensive summer school, held at Los Alamos Makers.
The program is completely free and open to students from underserved communities, including those in Española Valley, Pojoaque, and surrounding tribal communities.
The 3D Printing Summer School will welcome high school students to explore the exciting intersection of creativity, engineering, and technology.
Participants will:
- Learn Computer-Aided Design (CAD) using Tinkercad
- Master the basics of 3D printing technology
- Discover principles of load-bearing structures and efficient material use
- Design, print, and test their own structures to failure using a test fixture
- Explore how 3D printing settings can affect structural strength
- Receive feedback and iterate on improved designs
This immersive, hands-on learning experience will run over four days at Los Alamos Makers, and will include guidance from experienced Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) volunteers.
To support equitable participation, students commuting from outside Los Alamos will receive a $100 travel stipend. Lunch will be provided daily for all students and volunteers.
The 2025 3D Printing Summer School is sponsored by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Triad National Security, reinforcing their commitment to STEM education and outreach in Northern New Mexico.
“We’re thrilled to offer this opportunity to spark curiosity and skill-building in students who may not otherwise have access to such tools and training,” Los Alamos Makers Director Dr. Prisca Tiasse said.
