Daily Postcard: A flamboyantly beautiful Calliope Hummingbird perches majestically on a feeder recently in Los Alamos. The smallest of the hummingbirds in the United States, Calliope Hummingbirds visit Los Alamos in summertime from July through September. The bold stripes on the adult male’s throat set them apart from other Jemez hummingbirds. Weighing only 3 grams, these birds migrate all the way from southwest Canada to central Mexico. A great place to see hummingbirds is with the free, informal birding group at 10 a.m. Wednesdays in the observation lounge at PEEC’s Los Alamos Nature Center.
