AFTNM Pass Resolutions In Support Of Immigrant Community In New Mexico

AFTNM News:

ALBUQUERQUE  American Federation of Teachers New Mexico President Stephanie Ly and American Federation of Teachers Executive Vice President Kathy Chavez released the following statements:

“Today, our union took a stand of solidarity with our immigrant brothers and sisters, and especially our immigrant students. The two resolutions passed this afternoon reaffirmed our strong commitment to social justice for all we come in contact with in our professional lives, and are a recommitment to our pledge as professional educators that we believe all students – regardless of immigration status, or their family’s immigration status – have a right to a high quality public education,” Ly said.

“From the formation of the American Federation of Teachers in 1916, we have always taken a stand with those new to our country, recognizing that immigrants contribute to our deepening cultural fabric, and this is especially true in New Mexico. I am proud we have voted to align ourselves with our immigrant friends and neighbors, and have taken a stand against the divisive and hateful rhetoric we are currently seeing in our State and Country,” Chavez said.
