AFTNM News:ALBUQUERQUE ― American Federation of Teachers New Mexico President Stephanie Ly released the following statement:
“As expected, though unnecessary, Governor Martinez vetoed large swaths of the responsible, bi-partisan budget passed during the recent legislative session. Our union had hoped Governor Martinez would come to her senses and do what is best for New Mexicans, but her actions confirmed what many observers had long suspected – her line-item vetoes were less about ideology and more about settling petty scores with the Legislature.
“Governor Martinez’s vetoes jeopardize public education in New Mexico from early education through higher education, and her willingness to use access to quality higher education as a bargaining chip is without defense. Across all political beliefs is the understanding that investment in education is a foundational piece to move New Mexico forward in quality of life, business investment, and workforce preparedness. Governor Martinez’s actions do not align with her repeated promise to support public education in our State, and she has once again callously hurt our children and our communities.
“By wielding her veto pen, yet providing no alternative pathway forward, Governor Martinez is forcing a special session of the Legislature at the cost of $50,000 per day, which will exacerbate the already fragile budget. Legislators should report to the special session, override the Governor’s vetoes and adjourn, saving precious resources and putting us on a path forward which honors the State’s obligation to provide quality public education for our students at all levels.”
