AFT News:ALBUQUERQUE ― American Federation of Teachers Executive Vice President Mary Cathryn Ricker and American Federation of Teachers New Mexico President Stephanie Ly released the following statements:
“It is incredibly meaningful to have Executive Vice President Ricker take time out of her busy schedule to visit and welcome public educators in New Mexico. Hearing from – and being heard by – one of our national union leaders conveys an inspiring message to both new and veteran educators, alike, that we are all committed to the same vision and values for a strong, world-class public education for all of New Mexico’s students and communities. Though Mary Cathryn is not currently in a classroom, she continues to be a resource for all of us through her calm leadership and interest in innovation occurring in both small and large schools and districts,” Ly said.
“Visiting Socorro and Rio Rancho reminded me that AFT New Mexico is leading the way in solution-driven unionism. Across the state, AFT NM members are incorporating project based learning into curriculum, collaborating with parents, educators, administrators and the community, and putting in the hard work required to address students’ well being. The goal of my visit was ensure that AFT NM feels connected to their national union and to harness their energy so they can reach their goals—whether it’s obtaining Green Ribbon recognition like Sandia Vista or helping a child overcome a challenging math problem. It was an inspiring day, seeing the enthusiasm of hundreds of educators as they prepare their classrooms for their students, and I cannot wait to return to New Mexico to see the progress they are making in returning the joy of teaching and learning to their classrooms.”
