American Humane: What Cat And Other Pet Owners Need To Know About H5N1 Bird Flu

American Humane News:

WASHINGTON, D.C. — There have been recent media reports that cats have died after contracting the H5N1 bird flu.

American Humane’s team of expert veterinarians offers answers and advice for pet owners concerned about the health and welfare of their four-legged family members:

What is the bird flu?

The H5N1 bird flu is a strain of the influenza virus that primarily infects birds.

Can pets catch bird flu?

Yes. Some domestic companion animals, including cats and dogs, can catch the bird flu. However, most cases involve cats with outdoor access. Incidents with dogs are rare.

How is the bird flu transmitted to cats?

Experts believe that most cats contract the bird flu after interacting with a dead or sick wild bird infected with the virus.

Can my cat give me bird flu?

So far, there have been no reports of cat-to-human transmission of the H5N1 bird flu.

How widespread is the risk for cats?

Though there have been some news stories about cats dying from the bird flu, the true infection rate is unknown.

How do I know if my cat has the bird flu?

The symptoms of infection are varied, including loss of appetite, listlessness, difficulty breathing, runny eyes, and abnormal behavior. If you suspect your cat is ill, contact your veterinarian immediately.

How can I protect my pets from the virus?

If possible, American Humane recommends keeping cats indoors to prevent exposure to wild birds until we have more information.

If you encounter a bird that appears to be ill, injured or dead, do not touch the animal. Contact your local animal control to remove it.

Finally, keep vaccinations up to date on your cats and dogs.
