2021 Super Flower Blood Moon Viewed From White Rock

Stages of the 2021 super flower blood moon eclipse viewed early this morning from White Rock. A lunar eclipse happens when the moon moves into the Earth’ s shadow, which blocks the sun’s light. Unlike a solar eclipse, people can look directly at the moon with the naked eye. There are reasons for this total lunar eclipse’s exotic-sounding nicknames. Total lunar eclipses tend to give the moon a reddish hue. That’s the ‘blood’ part. The Farmers Almanac ascribes various nicknames to full moons for each month. The May moon is typically called the ‘flower moon’. This moon also will be among the closest Read More

It also coincides with the only total lunar eclipse of the year, earning it the moniker ‘Super Flower Blood Moon’. Photo by John McHale/ladailypost.com Read More

Daily Postcard: Fairy Slipper Blooms On Pajarito Mountain

Daily Postcard: A fairy slipper orchid blooms mightily Friday on Pajarito Mountain following last week’s rains. The fairy slipper orchid, called the most beautiful terrestrial orchid in North America, bears a single, showy flower on a single, dainty, purple stem. The flower of the fairy slipper orchid possesses no nectar and instead attracts its pollinators by deception. The scent and shape of the flower mimics those that do have nectar, which lures bumble bees. Bee land on the lip of the flower and enter the pouch in search of food. Failing to find any, the bee exits the pouch, rubbing against Read More

Full Moon Viewed From Eastern Area In Los Alamos

The full moon viewed this evening from Eastern Area. The Super Flower Blood Moon, the only total lunar eclipse of 2021, is set to occur Wednesday (May 26), according to NASA. The total lunar eclipse will begin at 4:47 a.m. EDT (0847 GMT) Wednesday and end at 9:50 a.m. EDT (1350 GMT), with peak totality — the ‘blood moon’ stage — occurring at 7:16 a.m. EDT (1116 GMT). If it is daytime in the local viewing location, you will have to watch webcasts of the eclipse to see it at its best. During a lunar eclipse, Earth’s shadow falls across the moon’s face as our planet moves between the moon and the sun. Father Theophan: 100 Bowls

Bowls made by Father Theophan as part of  his 100 bowl goal. Photo by Father Theophan

By Father Theophan
Saint Job of Pochaiv Orthodox Church
Los Alamos

So, I’ve gotten it in my head to make bowls for a “Souper Bowl Sunday” next year, or an “Empty Bowls” project. Which means, lots of bowls. I figure if I can make 100 bowls between now and next spring, even if I can’t get any other potters on board, I could raise some good money for a worthy cause.

One hundred of anything is a daunting task for someone who is not a production potter by any metric.

I try not to let reality rain on my parade.

Bowls are so simple and Read More

Daily Postcard: Rose-breasted & Black-headed Grosbeaks

Daily Postcard: A male Rose-breasted Grosbeak, left, and a Black-headed Grosbeak dine on seeds recently at a birdfeeder on the deck of a local residence. Rose-breasted Grosbeak are chunky birds that use their stout bills to eat seeds, fruit and insects. They also frequent backyard bird feeders, where they eat sunflower seeds with abandon. Most common in the eastern part of the country, the sweet, rambling song of the male Rose-breasted Grosbeak is a familiar voice of eastern forests. Source: allaboutbirds.org.
