Authors Speak Series Hosts Photographer and Author Don Usner

Mesa Public Library Art Gallery presents seventy remarkable photographic portraits by Don Usner of participants in the Lannan Foundation’s Readings and Conversations literary series of the last 15 years. All the portraits are black and white and eloquently reveal the personality of each author.

The exhibition is open to the public this month, and at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21 Don Usner will be guest speaker for the monthly Authors Speak event. Both an author and photographer, he will discuss his experience meeting and photographing the Lannan authors as well as his own books.

Atomic City Children’s Theater (ACCT), the Los Alamos Public Schools’ award winning after-school theater program, is excited to announce auditions for their Mid-School production of Disney Aladdin, Jr., a two-act musical play based on the full-length movie of the same name.

What causes someone to become a whistleblower? Novelist William C. Sailor draws on his 23 years of experience at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) to explore that question, among others, in “Fat Boy and the Money Bomb.”

Sailor holds a Ph.D. in Engineering Science from UC Berkeley. Now retired from LANL, he lives in Rio Rancho.

‘Matchstick Men’ Shows Thursday at MPL

I love a good con, at least onscreen, and Ridley Scott’s “Matchstick Men” (2003, rated PG-13), on the “big” screen this week at Mesa Public Library, is a pretty fantastic con.

It tells the deviant story of Roy (Nick Cage), one of those rare con artists who has to open the door exactly three times before letting a guest in the house, a spotless environ where the guest must immediately remove his shoes and vigorously disinfect the receiver after using the phone.

The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) Community Education department will offer the class, “Watercolors That WOW!” The class runs 6-8:30 p.m., Monday evenings, Nov. 11 through Dec. 16, in room 614 on the UNM-LA campus.

Watercolor artists of all levels are welcome in this class, where they will focus on capturing the motivations for their art and learn a variety of techniques to bring their paintings to life.
