The workshop is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 6 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center in Los Alamos. Visit https:////can-nm.org/events/ to register. The cost is $60.

“Sage-ing,” a program and a perspective that helps older people develop a balanced plan for their elder years. It will be led by national leaders of Sage-ing International, Drs. Gary and Charlotte Carlson. The goal is an elder lifestyle that is personally fulfilling and also beneficial to others.

This highly interactive workshop will introduce sage-ing concepts including life review, forgiveness work and issues surrounding our mortality. It will help participants explore feelings about aging and the role of spiritual development in our later years. Finally, it will begin the development of a personalized plan for our elder years, including serving others and leaving a legacy.

Today, most people approaching their elder years can expect to live another 20 or 30 years. But how do we want to live those years? Sage-ing (also known as Spiritual Eldering or Conscious Aging) is a model for living one’s elder years more consciously, more joyfully, and more compassionately.

It was developed over 25 years ago by Rabbi Zalman Schachter Shalomi and publicized through his book “From Age-ing to Sage-ing”, which has helped countless persons navigate their later years.

Rabbi Zalman also organized the non-profit Spiritual Eldering Institute in the early 90’s. This was replaced in 2004 by Sage-ing International, a teaching organization primarily active in the United States and Canada.

Presenter Gary Carlson was among the co-founders. Carlson was also a key figure in the creation of this “Awakening the Sage Within” workshop as a way of opening sage-ing thought to a much wider audience world-wide.

The goal of the March 6 workshop is an introduction to the principles and practices of Sage-ing or a review for people already familiar with the teachings. In addition, this Signature Program also serves as a prerequisite for the “Certified Sage-ing Leader” training program through Sage-ing International. Also, six social worker/counselor CEUs will be available upon request.

Charlotte M. Carlson, PhD, is a retired Jungian analyst. She has been a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University Of New Mexico School Of Medicine and a Clinical Member of the American Group Psychotherapy Association.

Both are trained Certified Sage-ing Leaders, Sage-ing Circle Facilitators, and Professional Members of Sage-ing International. Gary recently received the first Reb Zalman Leadership Award from Sage-ing International.

Charlotte and Gary have been married for more than 30 years and have three children and six grandchildren.
