Political News:
ALBUQUERQUE — Heather Berghmans, who is a policy analyst, finance consultant and native New Mexican, has announced her campaign to run for New Mexico State Senate District 15 in Albuquerque.
She is running in the June 4, 2024 Democratic Primary, challenging Daniel Ivey-Soto, who has not announced whether he will run for reelection.
“I am running for State Senate because I believe public service is one of the most impactful ways to improve the lives of kids, women, and families. I’ve seen it firsthand—I’ve seen what leaders with integrity and strong values can accomplish,” Berghmans said. “For over five years, I have worked as a policy analyst with our state lawmakers to pass legislation that has contributed to major victories for working families and our environment. I am ready to do more; I’m ready to serve in the New Mexico State Senate.”
Ivey-Soto was first elected to the State Senate in 2012. In 2022, multiple women came forward with sexual harassment allegations and a formal complaint was filed with the New Mexico Ethics Commission against him. Ivey-Soto has been asked to resign but thus far has refused.
“I also believe the families in District 15 deserve a leader who upholds high moral and ethical standards in their personal and professional conduct—not those who are under investigation for financial and ethical misconduct, as is Senator Daniel Ivey-Soto,” Berghmans said. “Senator Ivey-Soto has become a distraction and he is no longer effective. If he chooses to run for reelection, I am prepared to run a strong campaign to defeat him in June.”
